FERRIDAY — For the ninth straight year, Huntington head baseball coach Mitch Ashmore’s Baseball Camp was a success with 60 baseball players from ages 6-18 turning out to learn more about the game.

“It went well,” Ashmore said. “It was real hot, but the kids enjoyed it.”

At the camp players worked on the offensive and defensive fundamentals of baseball, but also touched on the little things. Players were split into smaller groups based on age to better accomplish this task.

“Camp director Chris Soileau did a good job of stressing the little things and how to carry them selves on the field as players,” Ashmore said. “This camp was not just about teaching hitting and throwing, it was about how to be a better ball player.”

Ashmore said this year’s participants had plenty of talent, especially in some of the older groups.

“There was some talent there that will definitely have a chance to play. But it will depend on how hard those kids are willing to work,” he said.

But despite the level of talent, Ashmore said each player knows more about the game after attending his camp, and hopefully each can think better on the diamond.

“Learning to think on the baseball field is what it is all about,” he said.
