NATCHEZ — Natchez youth “cast off” into knitting camp this week.
Natchez Needle Arts hosted a two-week camp for youth interested in knitting.
“We taught them how to cast on and off, increase and decrease and how to sew knitted fabric,” store manager Cindy Whittington said.
Island Knit Camp runs started Tuesday and ends today. Campers are served lemonade with umbrellas and cookies. Children and instructors wore lays in order to keep with the “island” theme.
“Most of the girls had some experience in knitting so everyone caught on pretty quickly,” Whittington said.
During their camp, the girls sewed a beanbag, a hair handkerchief and an island belt. Needles and yarn were provided, and six girls attended.
“They all learned how to increase and decrease,” camp coordinator Summer Whittington said. “I think most will come back and knit in the store.”
There is also a social aspect to the store.
“All the girls sit around and talk to each other about what is going on in their lives,” camp helper Kari Guido said. “We have all gotten to know each other a lot better.”
All the campers said they would continue their new hobby.
“ I am going to continue to knit,” participant Julia Matheney said. “I want to make a blanket and a jacket.”
Others just regarded it as a pastime.
“I will knit when I have free time, but I really have enjoyed it,” participant Margaret Carey said.
Natchez Needle Arts is considering the idea of an extended session opening the doors for one day a week for knitting lessons.
“It would be like a refresher for the kids,” Cindy Whittington said. “They can come in and address questions or increase their skills.”
