FAYETTE — Two Fayette men drowned in a lake while fishing Wednesday night, Jefferson County Coroner Will T. Turner said Thursday.

The two men were fishing out of a small boat, throwing out nets, said Turner, who was out of town at the time.

Turner said he did not know how the men drowned.

“Some people say one thing, some say another,” he said. “All we know is they did drown. We don’t know how that drowning came about. We don’t know if he jumped out of the boat or if the boat overturned.”

The pond off U.S. 61 is part of a hunting camp and has “no fishing” signs posted, Turner said.

“People have been slipping over there fishing without permission,” he said.

In his 24 years as coroner, Turner said he never remembered anyone drowning in the pond.

Jefferson County Sheriff Peter Walker could not be reached Thursday and the nmaes of the men were unavailable.
