VIDALIA — Vidalia pitchers, Cole Cupit and Allen Doyle were a walk away from throwing a perfect game in the win over Franklin County in the 9- and 10-year-old Dixie Youth Sub-District Tournament held in Vidalia Saturday night.

“It was pretty awesome,” Cupit said.

After a three up, three down first inning, Vidalia exploded for 12 runs on five hits.

Cupit threw two innings for five strikeouts and walked only one batter when Doyle took over in the third.

The hard throwing left-hander struck out nine batters in the final two innings.

“I just felt good tonight,” Doyle said.

Head coach Whest Shirley was pleased with the team performance.

“If we hit and pitch like that every time, I don’t have much to worry about,” Shirley said.

Christopher White had three of Vidalia’s 11 hits, tallying two RBIs, one double and a home run that came in the third inning.

“It was a perfect pitch and a good hit,” White said.

Vidalia will return to the field Monday at 8 p.m. to face the winner of Sunday’s Ferriday and Winnsboro game.

“I just want to thank all the minor league parents who worked on the field and painted the press box,” tournament director Mike Bowlin said. “It’s the best I’ve ever seen it.”
