MAGEE — Lee Ford and Craig Bradley each had a key hit for the Natchez All-Stars as they rolled to a 10-0 win over the Columbia All-Stars Monday afternoon at the Mississippi Dixie Youth Coach Pitch South Regional Tournament.
Even though the Natchez All-Stars had to wait four days to play their first day of the tournament because of one rain delay after another, it did not have any affect on them on the field and at the plate.
“The defense was terrific. Columbia’s an offensive hitting machine and we shut them down,” Natchez head coach Gary Farmer said.
Not only was the defense outstanding in keeping a good Columbia team off the scoreboard, but the offense kept putting the pressure on the opposition’s defense.
Natchez scored one run in the top of the first inning when Gage Dossett hit a stand-up double that scored Dalvion Jackson.
“It would have been out of the park at Sprague-Gousset Field in Natchez,” Farmer said of Dossett’s fly ball that stayed in the field of play at the ballpark in Magee.
Back-to-back-to-back singles by Brock Farmer, Reed White and Jace Calcote to load the bases for Ford, who came up big with a three-run double up the middle to give Natchez a 4-0 lead.
Then in the top of the third inning, Christian Day singled and scored when Craig Bradley hit a shot to the fence in left centerfield for a stand-up triple. Bradley scored when Jackson hit into a fielder’s choice for a 6-0 lead.
But Natchez was far from putting runs on the scoreboard itself.
In the top of the fourth, Zack Dukes hit a single to right field and White reached on an error. Calcote’s sacrifice fly brought in Dukes and White scored on another Columbia error. After being shutout in the top of the fifth, Natchez capped off the game with two runs in the top of the sixth inning.
Natchez will take on West Jasper today at 6 p.m. If Natchez wins, it will take on the winner of the Copiah-Moss Point game today at 8 p.m. Both of those winner’s bracket games will be held at Field 1. However, if Natchez loses to West Jasper, it will take on the winner of Game 10 today at 8 p.m. at Field 3.
