George Matthews

SAN FRANCISCO — Services for George Allen Matthews, 83, of California, formerly of Natchez, who died Thursday, June 14, 2007, were held Monday, June 25, 2007, at Paradise Baptist Church with the Rev. Lawrence Hart officiating.

Burial followed at Cypress Lawn Memorial Park, in Colma, Calif., under the direction of Dan Scales Funeral Services, Pittsburg, Calif.

Mr. Matthews was born June 24, 1924, on Sligo Ranch in Natchez, the son of James and Mary Matthews. He was employed at Dupont Warehouse for a several years and later joined the San Francisco Police Department where he served for 27 years. He was retired. Mr. Matthews joined the U. S. Air Force to serve his country in the Signal Core Division during World War II. After serving for three years, he re-enlisted and served an additional three years. He was a counselor to many, a humanitarian and a very giving person. His favorite saying was “if I can help somebody as I pass along, then my living shall not be in vain.” He lived according to his motto. He was always willing to help others despite his condition.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and sisters, Dorothy Howard and Ethyl Banks.

Survivors include his son, George Matthews Jr. and wife, Terry; brothers, James and Herman; sisters, Julia Rose Alice and Thelma.
