NATCHEZ — Twenty-five teams of two, one a member of Beau Pré Country Club and the other a guest, had a lot of fun despite the heat in the first round of the Beau Pré Member/Guest Golf Tournament.

Tom Matthews and Jason Rooks teamed up to shoot a bogey-free round of 8-under-par 64 to take the lead at the end of the first round.

“We played pretty well,” said Rooks, a Natchez native who now lives in New Orleans. “Nothing spectacular, but nothing real bad. My partner played much better than I did. But when your partner’s Tom Matthews, you expect that.”

Rooks said teaming up with Matthews was, well, “easy.”

“He hits it down the middle every time. That makes my round a lot easier. Just fun to watch.”

Things weren’t so easy for the team they were paired with Saturday. It was a long day at Beau Pré for the team of (Charlie) Fife and Fields, Chuck Fields said. “

Fife and Fields shot a 3-over-par 75.

Fields said it was “a pleasure to watch” the team of Rooks and Matthews. “Could’ve easily been better. They were just never in trouble,” he said.

Charlie Speed, who currently lives in Hattiesburg but will be moving to Natchez soon, teamed up with Wade Heatherly to shoot a 78. But despite the score, Speed enjoyed his day on the course.

“It was hot and long. But I got my money’s worth. I got to hit a lot of balls,” Speed said. “The best thing is we get to do it tomorrow.”

Jeff Hadley from Ridgeland and Trey Dickey had a good round on Saturday as they shot a 5-under 67.

“It was pretty good. Greens were rolling really good,” Hadley said. “My compliments to the superintendent. It looks really good with all the rain we’ve had. We played pretty good. We bogeyed a couple of holes that we let get away.”

“Fair. I played much better on the front than on the back,” Dickey said. “I thing we both did. Overall, I think we had a good round.”

The final round of the Member/Guest Tournament is today with tee times starting at 9:30 a.m.
