Trial from March 21 shooting begins today

VIDALIA — Two men who allegedly shot two other men with the intent of killing them are headed to court today.

Terrence J. Nix, 39, of New Orleans, is charged with attempted second-degree murder and aggravated battery.

Daryl L. White, of Ferriday, is charged with accessory after the fact to second degree murder and accessory after the fact aggravated battery.

Nix and White are charged as co-defendants in a trial of motions set for Wednesday.

The charges stem from a shooting incident that took place March 21.

Ferriday Police received a call at 7:53 p.m. March 21 a shooting had occurred in the parking lot of the Concordia Apartments at 200 Kyle Road.

Nix allegedly shot two men, Derrick Butler and Antonio Hawkins.

Hawkins was shot in the finger, and a projectile struck Butler in the upper arm.

According to police officials at the time, Butler had to have his arm amputated at the LSU-medical center in Shreveport.

An earlier incident between the victims and the alleged attacker had happened that day, officials said.

One of the victims had allegedly jumped Nix with a group of others at about 2 p.m. that day on Doty Road, officials said.

The girlfriend of one of the victims and her two children were reportedly in the car at the time of the incident, but were unharmed.

White was charged as an accessory to the crime because he allegedly drove a get-away car, Assistant District Attorney Brad Burget, who will prosecute the case, said.

An accessory to a crime is someone who has helped the person who committed the crime elude the police, Burget said.
