NATCHEZ — Parker Brumfield threw two touchdown passes during a 30-point second quarter and sophomore running back R.J. Fleming accounted for three touchdowns as the Trinity Episcopal Saints defeated the Tensas Academy Chiefs 45-8 Friday night.

“I thought we got the first-game mistakes out of our way,” Trinity head coach David King said. “Our conditioning played a factor. Tensas played extremely hard, but our speed at the end was the difference.”

Trinity actually trailed in this game after Jim Lentz’s 52-yard touchdown run and Bennett Schauf’s two-point conversion run gave Tensas an 8-0 lead with 7:33 remaining in the first quarter.

After that, the Saints dominated the game on both sides of the ball. Fleming scored his first touchdown on a 10-yard run and fellow sophomore running back Brandon Daggs, who had 15 carries for 112 yards, followed up with a two-point conversion run to tie the game at 8-8 with 5:54 to go in the opening quarter.

Then Brumfield threw his two touchdown passes less than two minutes into the second quarter. The first went to Easom for 11 yards to give Trinity the lead for good and the second went to Wells Middleton for 32 yards as the Saints opened up a 23-8 lead.

After Tensas scored early in the first quarter, its offense couldn’t get anything going against Trinity’s defense, which held the Chiefs to 117 total yards and recovered three fumbles.

Fleming went back to work as he returned a punt 55 yards for a touchdown with 7:42 to go in the second quarter and he added a 15-yard run with 2:36 left in that same quarter for a 38-8 lead at halftime.

“Parker showed some senior leadership. Big catches by Easom and Middleton. R.J. had a good game. He had a couple of big runs,” King said. “However, there were some breakdowns. I’d like to see some more consistency in our running game.”

Trinity (1-0) suffered what could be a big blow when Easom injured his collarbone in the second quarter. He went to the hospital for X-rays, but there was no report on the extent of his injury. This was the same collarbone that was broken near the end of last season.

Freeman put the finishing touches on Trinity’s win with a 1-yard touchdown run and Chas Moroney connected on his third extra point of the game with 6:05 to go in the third quarter.

Trinity hosts cross-town rival ACCS in the District 3-AA opener for both teams next Friday at 7 p.m. Tensas Academy hosts Franklin Academy in the District 6-A opener for both teams next Friday at 7 p.m.
