CENTREVILLE — Services for Elliot Edgar Cavin Sr., of Centreville, who died Sept. 22, 2007, at his residence, will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Centreville Baptist Church with the Rev. Dennis Johnsey presiding.

Burial will follow at the Oaklawn Cemetery in Centreville under the direction of Newman Funeral Home.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. until service time Tuesday.

Mr. Cavin was born Aug. 30, 1922, in Wilkinson County, the son of Herschel Leonard and Lora Hastings Cavin. He was a veteren of World War II who served with the Second Armored Division under General George Patton and the Ninth Air Force in France.

Mr. Cavin was a long-time member of Centreville Baptist Church, where he served as director of Sunday school and as a deacon. He was retired from the U.S. Postal Service and also served two terms on the Farm Bureau Board. He also served on the Centreville Academy School Board.

He also had a love for the land which included farming, raising cattle and horses. He belonged to the Mississippi Cattlemen’s Association and the American Quarterhorse Association.

He enjoyed being with his family, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, being called “Taw Taw” by his grandchildren.

He was preceeded in death by his parents; a daughter, Patricia Cavin Allen; and four brothers, Lynn Cavin, Glynn Cavin, Maxwell Cavin and Charles Cavin.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Pauline “Polly” Craft Cavin; son Elliot E. “Speedy” Cavin Jr. and wife Becky; daughters Melanie Aldridge and husband Dale and Georgia Messer and husband Conrad; sisters Vera “Billie” Gordy and Martha Cavin; grandchildren Joey Allen and wife Jennifer, Cavin Allen and wife Melissa, Amanda Aldridge, Laura Cavin, Nathan Messer and Tanner Cavin; great-grandchildren Lily and Davin Allen and Cole and Jay Allen.

Pallbearers will be Mike Cavin, Glynn “Sonny” Cavin Jr., Joey Allen, Jeff Gordy, Lawrence Seguin Jr., Cavin Allen, Allen Ray Wells, Jeffery Aaron and Bill Cavin.

Honorary pallbearers will be deacons of Centreville Baptist Church, Carles Carmeno, Lea E. “Bill” Hurst, Marty LeBlanc and Mike Bridwell.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donatoins be made to Centreville Baptist Church Building Fund or a charity of your choice.
