And the knocks keep coming

lorman — The beat just keeps on going for Alcorn State.
Turnovers and lack of consistency from the quarterback position doomed the Braves to yet another loss, this one a 17-7 defeat to Priarie View on Homecoming.
“We’re not playing well at all on offense,” Alcorn coach Johnny Thomas said. “We had receivers open and couldn’t get the ball to them and when we did, they dropped it or fumbled it. We can’t play like that and expect to win.”
Once again, it was a turnover-fest for Alcorn. The Braves turned the ball over four times including two first quarter interceptions by starting quarterback Tony Hobson, who was then lifted for Chris Wallace.
Wallace hadn’t practiced all week because of a high ankle sprain and it showed, as the Alcorn offense never got in gear.
Wallace finished the game 9-for-19 passing for 117 yards and the Braves had just 174 total yards in the game.
Even with Alcorn’s poor offensive play, they still held at 7-0 halftime lead thanks to an electric 70-yard punt return by Nate Hughes with just over a minute remaining in the half.
However, the Panthers would take back momentum on their first possession of the second half, driving 57 yards in seven plays for a touchdown.
The drive was capped off by Ben Boyd’s 23-yard scamper to tie the score early in the third.
“That scoring drive was the turning point in the game,” Thomas said. “Unfortunately, we had a couple of our defensive starters still in the locker room getting IV’s.”
Prairie View took advantage of a 41-yard punt return to the Alcorn 19 by Anthony Weeden to take the lead late in the third quarter.
It took just three plays for the Panthers to go the 19 yards, with Donald Babers punching it in from 2 yards out.
Alcorn had several opportunities in the fourth quarter to tie the score as the Braves’ defense held Prairie View, but two fumbles doomed their chances.
A 79-yard run by Boyd to the Alcorn 11 led to a Brady Faggard 24-yard field goal to ice the game with 1:54 left.
Boyd finished with 124 rushing yards on just six carries.
Thomas was disappointed that his offense couldn’t produce when his defense played so well.
“Our defense played well but the offense keeps putting them in precarious situations,” Thomas said. “Our defense is playing well, but it’s unfortunate that we can’t get that type of play from the offense.”
