MINDEN, La. — In Huntington’s biggest game of the season, the Hounds struggled offensively with Jody Cottongin not being able to play due to a broken collarbone.
And even against a familiar opponent, Huntington managed just 87 yards of offense in a 23-0 loss to the Glenbrook Apaches in the MPSA Class A South State Championship Game Friday night.
Glenbrook (11-3) will now play in the Class A State Championship Game next Friday at 1:30 p.m. at Mississippi College in Clinton against Bayou Academy, which defeated Briarfield 40-38 in the North State title game.
Huntington, unable to avenge a 16-12 loss at home to the Apaches during the regular season that cost it the District 6-A title, finished with a 9-5 record.
Glenbrook junior quarterback Jake Byrd had a good game. In addition to going 2-for-3 on extra points, he threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to Hunter Leppert with 7:17 remaining in the third quarter that gave the Apaches a 20-0 lead and he added a 30-yard field goal with 7:07 to go in the game to finish the scoring.
David Thompson had 10 carries for 66 yards, including a 3-yard touchdown run at the 9:00 mark of the first quarter. Jack Jiles, who led Glenbrook in rushing with 82 yards on 16 carries, scored on a 1-yard run with 8:01 to go in the second quarter that gave the Apaches a 14-0 halftime lead.
With Cottongin out, the Hounds had no continuity on offense. Martez Tolliver led them with 85 yards rushing on 25 carries. Freshman quarterback Chuck Bowie had just 12 yards rushing on 11 carries and his only completion of the game went for minus-7 yards.
