NATCHEZ — Near the turn of the millennium, Cathedral’s soccer program fielded its first varsity girls’ soccer team. On Friday night at D’Evereux Stadium, the Lady Green Wave took on a Tylertown team that is doing the same thing this year.

Led by Maddie Kirkwood’s three goals and two assists as well as Anne Elise Rinehart’s two goals, Cathedral defeated the Lady Chiefs 7-0. But on this night, this game was about Tylertown knowing what Cathedral has done over the last seven or eight years.

“That was a good game. We played well together as a team,” Lady Green Wave head coach David Gaudé said. “I give a lot of credit to my girls. They wanted to win tonight and they did. I contribute a lot of the scoring to good passing.”

Kirkwood scored in the 15th, 40th and 41st minutes of the first half and had an assist on a goal by Lanny Griffith. Rinehart’s first goal of the game came at the 35th minute of the first half as Cathedral (2-2) took a 5-0 halftime lead.

Madeline Jeansonne scored on a penalty kick at the 20th minute of the second half and Rinehart closed out the scoring with her second goal at the 38th minute with an assist from Kirkwood.

Gaudé said he was impressed with how well Tylertown played and that everyone on both teams enjoyed the game.

“The girls played hard and they never quit. They’re working on their foot skills. Their girls showed a lot of heart and they never gave up,” Gaudé said about the Lady Chiefs.
