Natchez — In keeping with the tradition of celebrating black history, Christian Hope Baptist Church at 301 LaSalle St. in Natchez will present its annual black history program, Sunday at 2:30 p.m.

The theme “Educating our Youth” will be presented in the form of inventions and technological advances from famous African-Americans. Using the ‘Did You Know?” format will introduce the youth in the audience to the accomplishment of their forebears. Incorporated in the program also will be accomplishment of famous Natchezians that blazed the trail for our present generation.

Historically, African-Americans have contributed significantly to the prosperity of this area from the very beginning, in the form of slave labor, inventions, medicine and politics. Their contributions, though not recognized as prominently as they should have been, are noteworthy of being recorded in the annals of history both in this area and nationwide.

Also of historical significance will be guest speaker, Miss Mississippi Kimberly Morgan, who will provide a motivational speech on the importance of education. Miss Morgan is only the second African-American to hold this coveted title. As a graduate of Alcorn State University and an educator, Miss Morgan is a strong advocate of the importance of education for Mississippi’s future generation. Throughout her reign as Miss Mississippi, her cause has been championing the need and importance of a good, quality education. Her noteworthy accomplishments should inspire, encourage and challenge our youth to aggressively pursue educational opportunities as they are presented.

Also featured on the program will be the display by Ms. Joyce Washington illustrating prominent African-Americans’ achievements and the roles they played. The Morgantown Maestros and Mr. Tony Fields will be participants in the program to help celebrate black history through song and other inspirational entertainments.

Pastor John W. Scott Jr. cordially invites the entire community to join us in this celebration. You will leave inspired, proud of your ancestry yet challenged to become more involved in contributing to the prosperity community in which we live for.
