FERRIDAY — Ferriday Town Hall was burglarized Thursday night or Friday morning, and during the burglary town records were gone through and a computer was taken.
The burglary was discovered when workers arrived at the municipal building Friday morning.
The burglars apparently entered through a window they broke, Police Chief Richard Madison said.
Once in the building, the thieves forced entry into the mayor’s office, which was locked, Madison said.
It is unclear if any of the city records were actually taken, Madison said.
The stolen computer, a laptop that belonged in the city building inspector’s office, was only thing of value that was taken, Mayor Gene Allen said.
“There wasn’t anything to take in my office except some paper,” Allen said.
The burglary delayed some town functions for approximately an hour and a half while investigators processed the scene and lifted fingerprints, but the town has been operating normally since then, Allen said.
The burglars tried to open one of the cash registers, but all cash is locked up overnight in the vault, Allen said.
The town hall does not have any kind of alarm system.
At the end of mayor-elect Glen McGlothin’s last term as mayor, a break-in also occurred at town hall.
Nothing was taken that time, but a significant amount of damage was done to his office, McGlothin said.
When he takes office in July, McGlothin said he plans to apply for a grant to place cameras in the downtown area and some kind of alarm system at town hall.
“I would like to put the cameras from maybe Florida Avenue at the gym to Mickey Gilley Drive, but this is the second time town hall has been broken into, so I definitely will put cameras at town hall,” McGlothin said.
