NATCHEZ — The rain could not dampen the spirits at the Natchez Dixie Youth Baseball League’s benefit tournament for the family of Mike Byrne.
Despite the threat of rain, the tournament was able to raise exact;y $1,200 to help the Byrne family with medical costs and other various expenses.
“Everything has been great up until now,” Tournament Official Joe Eidt said. “We’ve been on time and everything’s worked well — good crowd.”
Although the rain had halted the fifth game on Saturday, Eidt said folks were still hanging around, hopeful the rain would end and they’d be able to finish the benefit tournament.
Eidt said the Byrne family was in attendance Friday night at the games and were very grateful of what the league is doing.
“They were very appreciative,” Eidt said. “(The family) seemed to enjoy themselves last night.”
The tournament itself may have had a special meaning for Mike Byrne’s sons, Michael Jr. and Eric, who played in the Dixie Youth Baseball League growing up.
“It’s been a long time since they’ve been here — so I’m sure that brought back some fond memories.”
