WOODVILLE — Extensive precautionary measures were taken Tuesday during the Wilkinson County Democratic primary election.

Two special masters jumped from precinct to precinct all day long observing the voting process, while 13 representatives from the Mississippi Secretary of State’s Office were stationed at the different polls, as well.

The special masters, former Judges Barry Gibbs and Barry Ford were appointed by Judge Jim Persons to oversee the election and were responsible for making sure the election process was handled openly, fairly and in accordance with the law.

Communications director for the secretary of state’s office Pamela Weaver said the representatives were on site to watch.

“We were there for observatory purposes,” she said.

As of Tuesday evening, Weaver said not much could be drawn from the observations because it was too soon

Though the precincts were swarming with officials.

Voter Davis Scott said seeing the officials gave him more reassurance that the election was being conducted better than the first one in August.

“I don’t see anything going on out of the ordinary,” Scott said.

Voter Margaret Brown said this election has been handled better than any one ever has before.

She said seeing different poll workers running her precinct made her feel more trustworthy of the process.

Myrtis Davis said going out to vote was just the right thing to do, and for her, the interim period where the incumbents remained in office was just fine.

She said the incumbents have been doing a good job serving the city amidst the election contest turmoil.

The first Democratic primary was in August and after an election contest, a do-over was decided by the Mississippi Supreme Court.

The three races on the ballot Tuesday were for circuit clerk, sheriff and district two supervisor.

Lynn Tolliver Delaney was vying against Incumbent Circuit Clerk Mon Cree Allen, Jessie Stewart was challenging Sheriff Reginald “Pip” Jackson and Kirk Smith was contending District Two Supervisor Richard Hollins.

Independent candidate Calvin Gaines will challenge the winner of the sheriff’s race in a special general election and independent candidate Donna Smith is the contender against the winner of the circuit clerk’s race.
