Kayaker keeps paddling down Mississippi River

NATCHEZ — For Ned Mott, worrying is something he just doesn’t have time to, well, worry about.

“Worrying about something before it happens? What’s the use in that?” he said.

And that’s how he ended up in Natchez — by leaving his worries to the water.

Since the 21st of May, 70-year-old Mott has been using eastern United States waterways as highways and a kayak as his RV.

Staring near Huntington, Ind., on the Wabash River, Mott made his way to the Ohio River then the Mississippi River and soon found himself camping out across from the Under-the-Hill Saloon in Natchez.

“I heard about Natchez and this little saloon way up the river,” Mott said a few weeks ago when he stopped in town.

“I’ve seen everything from school buses to Port-a-potties float by,” Mott said. “But it wasn’t anything for me to worry about so I just kept on paddling,” he said.

Mott said his motivation is just getting away from it all.

His plans are to head out the mouth of the Mississippi River and use the barrier islands as a shield as he travels eastward along the coastline until he reaches Florida.
