Natchez 13s and 14s set to compete for title

NATCHEZ — Today the Natchez Dixie Boys 13-year-old team begins its quest for a state title when they face Magee at 7 p.m. in Cleveland.
The Natchez 13s road to the south state tournament has been a bit easier than some of their opponents.
Because Natchez only had two teams in their district, they received an automatic bid to south state.
Although they haven’t been playing official games, that doesn’t mean they’ve just been sitting around.
The team has been practicing for three weeks, and recently scrimmaged against Vidalia and the 14-year-old All-Stars.
Natchez coach Chris Lowe doesn’t think his team will be at a disadvantage due to their time off, but acknowledged they could be.
“I just hope they come out and have their mind on it,” Lowe said. “Practicing that long without playing can put you at a disadvantage, but I really believe they can pull it off.”
Lowe said his team has good bats and three good pitchers.
The tournament is a nine-team double-elimination tournament and will run through Thursday.
Natchez 14s set for state tournament
The Natchez 14-year-old Dixie Boys All-Stars will open the state tournament against Kosciusko at 2 p.m. today in Hattiesburg.
The tournament is a 10-team double-elimination tournament.
Natchez coach Brad Mullins said his team is up to the task.
“I feel good at the moment,” Mullins said. “I think the boys are ready to play ball and if we show up to play I think we have as good of a shot as any (of winning the tournament.”
Mullins said he plans to start Kin Mullins on the mound today.
“He’s got a decent fastball and places the ball well,” Mullins said. “(He’s) got a good off-speed pitch — although we try not to overdue it with the curveball.”
Natchez defeated Brookhaven in a best-of-3 series in the district 4 tournament.
