HERNANDO (AP) — The DeSoto County Animal Shelter are going to implant microchips in all dogs and cats adopted from the facility.

DeSoto County supervisors approved this proposal this week.

Shelter director Larry Houston and assistant director Monica Mock said the microchipping will help owners find lost animals and the county keep better track of the pet population.

Mock said officials weren’t sure when the program will begin. They’re waiting for supplies to arrive.

Microchipping will be offered as part of a $25 adoption fee.
