Retirees can still get stimulus checks

NATCHEZ — Hundreds of veterans and retired residents in Adams County are eligible to file for their economic stimulus payment, but have not done so.

As of mid-June, there were approximately 1,100 such retirees or veterans who had not filed to receive the payments, according to the IRS’s New Orleans Office Public Information Officer Deirdre Harris.

Many who were eligible do not normally file federal income taxes because they do not have a significant income, but to receive a stimulus payment they need to file a simplified version of the 1040A form.

Those included are those who receive at least $3,000 in earnings or benefits from Social Security, Veteran’s Affairs disability or Retired Railroad Worker’s pension.

The AJFC Community Action Agency, Inc. will offer a free stimulus payment return preparation from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday at 1038 North Union St., building A.

To receive assistance in filing the return, retirees and veterans should bring a picture ID or identity document and verification of a Social Security number for the taxpayer and for qualifying spouses and children, if applicable.

Verification can be proven with either a Social Security card or letter or notice from the Social Security Administration or the Veteran’s Administration reflecting a social security.

Verification is needed for everyone listed on the tax return.

Those filing also need to bring a form 1099 from the Social Security Administration of the Veteran’s Affair’s Administration. If that form is not available, the taxpayer can provide a monthly statement or the amount of their monthly benefits.

Those who file also need to provide proof of any other taxable or non-taxable income.
