Three years ago when Hurricane Katrina slammed into the Gulf Coast, the Natchez community demonstrated what the area could accomplish when it works together.

Once again, volunteers are mobilizing to provide assistance during Hurricane Gustav.

4 There was a little something for everyone at the Great Southern Outdoor Expo over the weekend. More than 7,000 hunting and fishing fans attended the second-annual event.

4 The Adams County recycling committee took the first steps toward a recycling program Monday. More than 40 area leaders met for the first time to discuss the issue.

4 Cold War era planes invaded area skies as the Southern Navion Air Group held its annual Labor Day fly-in at the Natchez-Adams County Airport Saturday.

4 Shoppers will soon have another reason to spend their money at home. The Natchez Mall announced a 12,000 square-foot strip center expansion.

4 Need a cartoon fix? The Natchez Downtown Development Association and the Natchez Little Theatre are partnering to create the “Captain Natchez Show,” an afternoon of cartoons and skits for area children.

4 The Rev. Clifton Marvel believes in the miracle of watermelons. Marvel recently discovered the plant that suddenly appeared in his yard. Marvel’s careful tending has yielded two juicy melons — a gift from God, he says.

As the stress of Hurricane Gustav bears down on the Miss-Lou this week, let us be on the lookout for other miracles, both big and small.
