Volunteers shine through storm clouds

Behind almost every storm cloud, there’s a silver lining. Sometimes there’s even a rainbow or two.

Even before Hurricane Gustav’s dark storm clouds passed, silver linings and rainbows were popping up all over the Miss-Lou.

Rainbows popped up at churches turned into shelters such as Parkway Baptist Church and Community Chapel Church of God.

Silver linings were seen in neighborhoods, where neighbors shared food, water and ice.

Rays of sunshine peeked through the dark storm clouds as friends checked on friends and helped each other in whatever ways that they could.

The volunteerism evident throughout the Miss-Lou is truly astounding.

While electrical workers receive lots of praise as they quickly flip switches and restore creature comforts, lots of other less visible volunteers pepper the Miss-Lou with goodness.

Miss-Lou residents worked in the hot sun on Wednesday to distribute water and ice to residents. The resulting traffic jam nearly filled up Canal Street.

As residents zoomed away with ice and water in tow, a valiant band of local volunteers sweated in the hot sun as droves of residents piled though the distribution lines.

Just like the days following Hurricane Katrina, the volunteerism seen in Natchez-Adams County illustrates one of our area’s absolute best parts — our people.
