MEADVILLE — When Charleston made the trip to Franklin County they planned to focus on stopping the quarterback and the running game. However, both of these proved to be too much for them.
The Bulldogs out gained Charleston 264 to 174-yards in their 14-10 victory.
However, Franklin County spent much of the game trying to over come an early lead by Charleston.
Charleston made a 25-yard field goal with 7:48 left in the first quarter. They followed that up with a 37-yard touchdown by Willie Bradford with 3:20 left on the second quarter.
That was when the Bulldogs began to turn things around.
“We had a backup quarterback (Edward McGee) come in and complete about a 50-yard pass for us down the sideline,” Franklin County head coach Trent Hammond said.
That set up their first score. The Bulldogs put starting quarterback Jamie Collins back in the game. Collins handed the ball off to Jordan Hunt, who put Franklin County on the board with 33 seconds left in the first half.
With 10:43 left in the fourth quarter, Collins scored on a 7-yard touchdown run to pull ahead and seal the win for the Bulldogs.
“I give them credit,” Vance said. “They just played a whole lot better in the second half. It was a tough game, and that’s just the way it goes sometimes.”
Hammond contributed the turn-around to halftime adjustments by his assistant coaches.
“The ‘W’ may go on my record, but these dudes own the football game,” Hammond said of the assistant coaches.
Hammond was very impressed with his team’s win.
“The key for us was we had to line up and play a physical football team,” Hammond said. “Charleston’s one of those teams that will come in and black-and-blue you. Tonight’s game was not for the faint of heart.”
And while Jamie Collins may have been a deciding factor on offense, he also contributed to the Bulldog’s second half shutout with five tackles and an interception.
“Offense may fill the seats, but defense puts ‘Ws’ on the board, and that’s what they did tonight.”
But the Bulldog’s close victory took a lot more than just Collins, Hammond said.
“When you win one 14-10 and you come from 10 down, it’s not a one-man deal. It’s a whole bunch of guys,” Hammond said.
