Injured Rams take on Franklin

WOODVILLE — Disappointment has settled into the Wilkinson County Christian locker room as quarterback George Davis was scheduled to have surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament on Wednesday.

Davis will be out the rest of the season after tearing his ACL in WCCA’s 14-13 loss to Claiborne on Friday.

He is one of three players injured for the Rams in that game. Wingback and place holder Justin Davis suffered a high ankle sprain and is day-to-day, while fullback Spencer Smith was sent to the hospital with a neck injury. CAT-scans and X-rays for Smith were negative, and he is day-to-day as well.

Yet the Rams (1-3) must play on without three of their best, taking on Franklin Academy of Louisiana on Friday (1-2).

Coach Sam Byrd hopes the losses will inspire his team to push harder.

“I saw a little bit of it Friday night,” he said. “They started to step up. We’ve got to cut out mistakes and play aggressive ball for four quarters.”

The Rams’ game plan will change a little bit, because they liked to get the ball into their receivers’ hands.

Backup Ty Condon will now be taking the snaps, and the running game will have to be on its toes.

“Receiver was one of our big threats, but that’s basically still where we’re trying to go,” Byrd said. “We’re going to stay in our base offense with our running game and see what this team can do.”

Because the same players that play offense also see the defensive side of the ball on this 18-player team, the defensive scheme will not be much different.

Byrd said they know they have to step up harder to hold down the Cougars.

“They’ve had some injuries the same as us, but they seem to play hard,” he said. “It will take a great performance from us to win the ballgame.

“They are good size kids, about the same size we are. They have a good running back, and their quarterback runs the option well. A lot of people will have to take the pitch man, and a lot of people will take the quarterback.”
