Centreville facing tough test in Bowling Green

NATCHEZ — Centreville Academy breezed through a 35-2 win against Columbia Academy on Friday.
The Tigers scored four touchdowns in the first quarter and played their second and third string through most of the game.
It won’t be so easy this week, however, when Centreville takes on Bowling Green Academy.
The Buccaneers are 5-0, beating last week’s opponent, Amite, 54-13. That is the first time they have allowed more than one touchdown, and they’ve scored under 40 points just once, a 39-6 win over Silliman Institute.
“They’re very good,” said Centreville assistant coach Brian Stutzman. “They throw the ball well. They run a spread offense, and they’ve got several receivers that can catch it and a quarterback that can throw or run it just as well either way.”
Stutzman said nearly every team in MPSA District 5-AA runs some version of a spread offense, but the Buccaneers throw better than anyone else he has seen this season.
“They can run, too, so it’s just a tough situation,” he said. “We’ve got to play better defense than we’ve been playing. We have to keep our responsibilities and not have any mistakes mentally.”
Stutzman is hoping his team (3-2) is on the rebound from a previous 13-12 loss to Central Private in which the Tigers lost three fumbles and failed on a two-point conversion.
“We’ve had some seniors step up. Leadership seems to have gotten better,” he said. “We’re still focusing on fundamentals, but we’re getting back on the right track.”
