NATCHEZ – Services for John Newman Jr., 83, of Natchez, who died Thursday, Oct. 16, 2008, at Natchez Community Hospital, will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Rose Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Kenneth Stanton officiating.
Burial will follow at the Natchez National Cemetery under the direction of George F. West Funeral Home.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Mount Zion Baptist Church and from 10 a.m. until service time Friday at Rose Hill Baptist Church.
Mr. Newman was born June 5, 1925, in Sicily Island, La., the son of John Newman Sr. and Stella Brown Newman. He attended Brumfield School and was formerly employed by Armstrong Tire and Rubber Company and Fidelity.
Mr. Newman was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church where he was a member of the choir and was a former member of the Natchez Tornadoes. He enjoyed singing, watching sports, sitting on the front porch talking with his neighbors, family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Thelma Stanton Newman; eight sisters, Pearline Newman Vance, Charity Newman Kimble, Harriet Newman, Lucille Newman Stewart, Virginia Newman, Mary Newman Easton, Claudia Newman and Augusta Newman; six brothers, Walter, Robert, Carney, Charlie, Dan and Matt Newman; and one son-in-law, Walter L. Moore.
Survivors include six children, Merline E. Campbell and husband, Dr. Lee George Campbell, Cleopathia L. Moore, Dr. John Edward Newman and Zeny, Jean B. Newman, Joseph J. Newman and wife, Flora, and Timothy I. Newman; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one godchild, Dr. Morris Ray Stanton; and a number of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Pallbearers will be Dr. Morris R. Stanton, Joseph Newman, Jacquin Newman, Lee George Campbell Jr. and Jamal Bouldin.
