Trinity clinches district title for third straight year

RAYVILLE, La. — The MPSA District 3-AA championship was on the line Friday night as the undefeated Trinity Episcopal Saints, ranked No. 2 in Class AA, took on the Riverfield Academy Raiders.
Trinity Episcopal jumped out to an early 21-0 lead before having to hold on for a 24-14 win over Riverfield to win its second straight District 3-AA title. The Saints will go into their showdown at Centreville Academy next Friday night with a 10-0 record.
Statistically, the Saints dominated the Raiders. Trinity had 16 first downs, 176 yards rushing and 254 yards passing. Riverfield had 10 first downs, 165 yards rushing and only 41 yards passing.
However, Trinity (4-0 in District 3-AA) fumbled the ball seven times, lost three of them and had two touchdowns called back by penalties.
The Saints were penalized eight times for 70 yards to just two penalties for 20 yards for the Raiders.
Givonni Dent threw a 51-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Daggs, scored on a 1-yard run and threw a 45-yard touchdown pass to R.J. Fleming that gave Trinity a 21-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Riverfield (6-4, 2-2) got back in the game with an 18-yard touchdown run by Corbin Cater in the second quarter and an 18-yard touchdown run by Brad Rogers in the third quarter.
But Chas Moroney, who made all three extra points in the first quarter, made the biggest kick of the game with 6:48 to go in the fourth quarter as he connected on a 30-yard field goal to give the Saints the 10-point lead.
Dent threw for 191 yards on 7-of-18 passing, ran for 30 yards on six carries and had one catch for 23 yards. Fleming had 11 carries for 105 yards, completed two of six passes for 63 yards, and had two catches for 66 yards.
Wells Middleton had one reception for 25 yards to go with six carries for 24 yards and Daggs had three catches for 89 yards.
