JACKSON (AP) — The Department of Homeland Security has made 12 recommendations for improvements to security at Jackson-Evers International Airport.

The recommendations come after a two-year study into airport security problems. Federal officials would not offer specifics.

Homeland Security Inspector General Richard Skinner began his inquiry following a series of stories published in 2006 by The Clarion-Ledger. Those stories detail problems at Jackson-Evers, including allowing Mayor Frank Melton to bring firearms aboard commercial flights, tip-offs of undercover inspections and other security breeches.

The final report says five other airports were studied: Baltimore/Washington Airport, Charlotte-Douglass International Airport in North Carolina, Dulles International Airport and in Virginia, Lubbock International Airport in Texas and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.
