Indictment is second in murder

NATCHEZ — A recent grand jury indictment has landed one local man in the Adams County Jail for a year-old murder.
Patrick Lewis Conner, 48, was indicted for murder recently and arrested Sunday in connection with the September 2007 death of Pete Jackson.
District Attorney Ronnie Harper said additional investigation into the murder made it appropriate to charge Conner as a co-indictee.
“And the grand jury felt the same way,” Harper said.
Mary Louise McQuarters, who lived with Jackson for several years, was charged with Jackson’s murder just one day after he was killed.
While details on the murder are still not readily available authorities said they believe they are able to link Conner to the crime.
Natchez Police Sgt. Craig Godbold said Conner had been living with McQuarters at the time of the murder and had some relation to her.
During their investigation police took statements from Conner that were allegedly found to be false and led police to believe Conner was involved, Godbold said.
While Godbold was unsure of exactly how Conner and McQuarters were related, Godbold said Conner was at the residence when police arrived on the day of the murder.
In addition, Godbold said statements made by McQuarters allegedly name Conner as a participant in the beating death.
Witnesses have also allegedly placed Conner at the Dumas Drive residence, where the murder happened, during the day before the murder, Godbold said.
Godbold said while Jackson ultimately died from blood loss, as a result of a cut on his wrist, police also know that Jackson was beaten with a heavy, blunt object like a vase or bottle.
Conner’s indictment does not indicate his guilt, it means the grand jury believes there is enough evidence for charges to be brought and a trial to be scheduled. Conner was being held without bond. McQuarters was indicted in early March.
Harper said her trial wouldn’t likely begin until March.
