Liberty field to get new bathrooms

NATCHEZ — The Liberty Road ball field is on its way to getting a facelift.
The Adams County Board of Supervisors discussed the pending work at their meeting Monday.
Once completed, the work would include new bathrooms and possible renovations to the park’s concession stand.
Supervisor Mike Lazarus spearheaded the project and said he has recruited a group of volunteers to donate materials and labor to the project.
“It really needs a lot of work,” Lazarus said of the park’s facilities. “It’s not a good reflection of the county. We have to rectify that.”
Lazarus said the bathrooms are old, not handicapped accessible, and in the past have overflowed and seeped into the adjoining concession stand.
At Monday’s meeting, Lazarus requested a budget amendment of $7,000 to complete the necessary work at the park.
While the request was denied, the project is still moving forward.
Supervisor Darryl Grennell said the plans must first be submitted to the county’s recreation board for approval then the supervisors could amend their budget for the requested amount.
And while Lazarus said he was pleased with Monday’s progress, he sees a need to move quickly.
“Time is of the essence,” he said.
The first scheduled game at Liberty Park is scheduled for mid-February.
Lazarus said he’d like to see work begin in the coming weeks.
In other news, the supervisors have not heard back from the residents of Beau Pré Road concerning their request for speed bumps.
Several residents on the road requested the speed bumps be installed to slow chronic speeding.
The residents’ request was granted but work never started because it was later learned a petition circulated among residents to request the speed bumps was not correctly filled out.
Several people who signed the petition did not live on the road, as required by the supervisors.
And now that petition will likely take a little longer to get completed.
County Administrator Cathy Walker said two roads that join Beau Pré will be allowed to sign the petition.
However, now residents must get 75 percent of the residents living on all three streets, not just Beau Pré, to sign the petition.
Walker said since Whitney Road and McRae Road intersect Beau Pré their residents will be allowed to sign the petition.
“It could take them longer,” Walker said.
