NATCHEZ — A grand jury has indicted a Natchez man on charges of murder.
Jordan Bates, 18, was indicted Wednesday for his role in a murder that occurred Aug. 12.
In that incident police said Bates allegedly shot Charvius Martin, 24, in the back of the head as Martin, Bates and another man drove through the Roselawn subdivision.
Natchez Police Sgt. Craig Godbold said he believes Bates to be the only shooter in the case.
However, a third man, Erik Hutchins, was also arrested in relation to the case.
He was charged with tampering with evidence.
District Attorney Ronnie Harper, like Godbold, said he was pleased to see the case moving forward.
An indictment from the grand jury does not mean Bates is guilty.
It means the grand jury believed there was enough evidence in the case to proceed with a trial.
Harper said he expects the trial to begin in March.
As for a motive in the slaying, Godbold said he believes the murder was “drug related.”
