Island-effect beneficial for Natchez

Although technically only bordered by water on one side, in many ways Natchez is an island.
Rarely do visitors just “happen” to pass through the area. You sort of have to intend on getting here.
We’re not on a major thoroughfare between large cities.
And we’re not an international business hub.
But what some residents who say “you can’t get anything good here” often look at negatively is really a blessing in disguise, too.
First, those that have the notion that the “island” of Natchez isolates the shopping experience just aren’t trying very hard.
From downtown shops who can provide personalized customer service and order almost anything that they may not have in stock to local car dealers who can locate you everything from a good new or used car to a rare muscle car or luxury vehicle, the island of Natchez is quite resourceful.
Second, with the slight isolation comes some insulating effects from the rest of the world.
Weeks ago we reported that, while the national banking system was sketchy, a look at our local banks revealed that the word “sub prime” wasn’t really even in their vocabulary.
Now, as retailers are counting up their sales and inventories from the holiday season, a similar island-effect is seen locally.
While nationally, the holiday shopping season was considered among the worst in many years, locally, business owners report better-than-expected results.
We’re of the belief that the effects of the global slowdown will be lessened in Natchez and the rest of the Miss-Lou because of the island effects.
So pass another cup of coconut juice, crank up the Jimmy Buffett music and let’s keep Natchez rolling along.
