NATCHEZ — The American Guild of Organists Chapter in Jackson, is sponsoring a Pedals, Pipes and Pizza event in Natchez Saturday morning.
This educational event will introduce the pipe organ to piano students and will give students an opportunity to play the pipe organ, learn how it works and enjoy a pizza lunch. Students in grades 4 through 12 are invited to this free event.
The AGO sponsors Pedals, Pipes and Pizza events all over the country. Church music has gone in many different directions with instruments other than an organ, and many small churches who still use keyboard music are not able to afford a pipe organ.
There are quite a few keyboard students who have not seen or heard a pipe organ. Many small towns may have organs in churches, but they are unable to find anyone who is a trained organist.
The event will begin at 9 a.m. at St. Mary Basilica at 107 South Union St. in downtown Natchez.
It will end at 12:30 p.m.
Each student should register in advance by e-mailing Barbara Tracy tracy@vicksburg.com. Students should also bring a familiar piano piece to play on the organ.
Pat Doherty, organist at St. Mary Basilica, will be the host in Natchez.
Students will also visit Trinity Episcopal in downtown Natchez during the morning.
The program will include presentations by Jackson AGO members and our Natchez hosts.
Parents and teachers are also welcome to attend.
