Talking boards can move us forward

The Natchez Board of Aldermen and the Adams County Supervisors have looked a bit like peas in a pod lately, and that’s a good thing.

The local leaders seem to have the same concerns and the same desires for our community. And they are working together.

Though the history of the boards in recent months has been act too quickly then react, the end result has been good for us all.

When recreation funding came up in September, both boards seemed unwilling to budge. The city said the county must pay. The county said the city didn’t have a good plan.

For a moment, the hope for a field of dreams seemed dead at the board table.

But soon — and with the help of the Natchez-Adams Chamber of Commerce — the board members were sitting at the same table.

We’ve yet to see the fruit of their meetings, but both sides say good recreation news is coming.

Last week, the county voted to jerk all of its money for the city-county funded Economic Development Authority without even telling the city.

The move was silly at best, illegal at worst.

But Monday, both boards will discuss their concerns about the EDA together.

At least one supervisor has said he’s willing to continue the funding if changes are made.

It’s great to see these boards talking in the same room.

We hope, from now on, talking in a public forum might come before decision-making.

Open, honest communication will take our community places, and we’ll gladly ride on the backs of our elected leaders to get there.
