JACKSON (AP) — Mississippi senators have once again killed a proposal to let cities increase property taxes to pay for parks.
A bill that would’ve given cities the option of increasing taxes was killed the first time Monday. It was debated a second time Tuesday, and was killed again.
The Senate decided not to have a second round of debate on two other bills, and those move to the House for more work.
One would let Jackson voters decide whether to increase the sales tax from 7 percent to 8 percent on many items, to pay for public safety and road repairs.
The other could lead to liquor sales at restaurants in parts of Tishomingo, Pearl River and Rankin counties.
