NATCHEZ — A Roxie man apparently needed a drink after he allegedly failed to get away with a woman’s purse, and that was where police found him Friday night.
George Thomas Garland Jr., 34, 35 Walker Lane, Roxie, was arrested on charges of petit larceny Friday night.
Garland allegedly ran through the back door of King’s Tavern on Jefferson Street and snatched a woman’s purse that was sitting on the counter before running out the door, Natchez Police Sgt. Craig Godbold said.
“An employee of King’s Tavern basically tackled him outside, and he dropped the purse and ran off,” Godbold said.
Garland didn’t go far though, and police later reportedly found him in a downtown bar, and he was positively identified as the suspect, Godbold said.
The victim was able to recover all of her belongings.
Garland was charged with petit larceny because no one was holding the purse at the time that he grabbed it.
The amount of money that was in the purse at the time of the incident is factored in on the charges, Godbold said.
Garland was detained on a $704 bond Saturday.
