NATCHEZ — The team of Kevin Smith and Wesley Rogers had the clubhouse lead at 13-under-par 58 at the Duncan Park Men’s Golf Association Scramble at the Duncan Park Golf Course. And that was the first pairing to turn in its scorecard.

And that score more than stood up as Smith and Rogers took first-place honors in the championship flight thanks in large part to an unbelievable finish on their final three holes — an eagle on No. 1, a birdie on No. 2 and an eagle on No. 3, all par-4 holes.

“We played pretty good. Wesley hits in long and accurate,” Smith said. “We played solid. We’re proud to come out and support the Men’s Golf Association. Greg (Brooking) does a great job out here.”

“We made an 8-foot putt for eagle on No. 1 and a 20-footer for eagle on No. 3,” Rogers said. “The greens putted great.”

However, Smith and Rogers could have had an even lower score had it not been for a stretch of five straight pars on the back nine starting on No. 14. They started their round on No. 4 and were at 8-under-par through their first 10 holes.

“We were trying to play left-handed, and we ended up with a bunch of pars,” Rogers said.

Charles Mardis and K.G. Watkins, who started on No. 2, got off to a good start with six birdies on the front nine, but struggled on the back nine and wound up in second place at 9-under-par 62.

“Charles and I birdied everything on the front except two holes. The back nine, we couldn’t make any putts,” Watkins said. “We didn’t have any putts over 20 feet. We had eagle putts, birdie putts. We couldn’t make them. If we had made some of those putts, we could have gone 19-under.”

Bubba Bruce and Allen Smith finished third in the championship flight with a round of 7-under-par 64 while Brooking and Eddie West came in fourth at 6-under-par 65.

George Hude said this two-person tournament was a good way to restart the Men’s Golf Association at Duncan Park, which he added had been inactive for 10 years.

“I’m just blessed we got to play. We want to get the Men’s Golf Association off the ground and that’s what we did. Everybody had a good time and enjoyed the tournament. We raised $840 and that will probably go up some.”

A scorecard playoff determined first, second and third places in the first flight after three teams had rounds of 4-under-par 67. Loyd Howington and Jimmy Moffett won the scorecard playoff, with Clayton Foster and Doug Brown coming in second, and Arlis Rogers and Neal Partridge finishing third. Ken Smith and Malcolm Anders ended up in fourth place at 2-under-par 69.
