The theme this year is “Celebrating People in Action.” Mississippi Homemaker Volunteers of Adams County who work in conjunction with Mississippi State University Extension Service would like to take this opportunity to raise the awareness of our organization.
Members of this group are ordinary people who accomplish extraordinary things through service.
Adams County Volunteers have done the following things this year: teddy bear collecting for the Mississippi Highway Patrol, making tote bags for Blair E. Batson Children’s Hospital in Jackson, collecting items for Mississippi Mental Hospital at Whitfield, making lap throws and wheelchair bags for nursing homes and shut-in residents, reading to elementary students, tutoring, assisting at local hospitals and working with AARP Tax Preparation Program.
We also made contributions to the following charities: Ronald McDonald House, American Red Cross, Salvation Army, American Cancer Society, and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and the list could go on and on.
The officers of Mississippi Homemaker Volunteers of Adams County are, Lillian Clark Edney, president; Lee. J. Braxton, vice president; Birdie Wade, secretary; Inell Lyles, treasurer; and Dorothy Whitley, parliamentarian.
Committee chairs are: Linda Gooden, family issues; Jacqueline Johnson, health and nutrition; Leola Johnson, community service; Ernestine Stanton, environment; Ora Frazier, international; Mary G. Stanton, awards and recognition; myself, public relations; DeElla Lewis, library; and Willie B. Williams, sunshine.
One of our members from Adams County served as president at the state level. She is Mary Gladys Stanton. In addition, Edney presently serves on the state scholarship committee and I am serving as senior director of the Southwest Area, which includes eight counties.
MHV is composed of five clubs.
The clubs and presidents are: Catherine Williams — Hattie Rose Marshall, president; Country Living — Janice Alexander, president; Sibley — Wilbert Wade, president; Town and Country — Dorothy Thompson, president; and Violet Montgomery — Dorothy Champ, president.
Serving as a volunteer is a fulfilling experience and we would like to invite anyone who has the time and desire to serve to become a member of this group and experience the joy that we have from serving others.
The council meetings are the fourth Wednesdays at 9:30 a.m. at the Extension Building on Carthage Point Road. Each club has its own monthly meetings. For more information call 601-445-8201 and ask for Penny.
Bonita D. REED is public relations chair of the Adams County Mississippi Homemaker Volunteers.
