JACKSON (AP) — Jackson police officer Michael Recio could learn Wednesday when he’ll be tried on alleged civil rights violations now that his co-defendant, Jackson Mayor Frank Melton, has died.
Melton and Recio had been scheduled for trial this week. After Melton’s death this past week, however, a hearing for Recio was scheduled for today. But that’s the day of Melton’s memorial and the hearing was changed to Wednesday by U.S. District Daniel Jordan.
Melton and Recio were accused in the 2006 sledgehammer attack on a duplex Melton considered a crack house.
Prosecutors have indicated that they may need time to work on the case in light of Melton’s death.
Jordan says hundreds of jury questionnaires were already sent out.
