Natchez — What was life like for kids in the early days of Mississippi?
Children will have the chance to find out during Historic Jefferson College’s Pioneer Camp. From June 9-12, children ages 7 to 12 can attend this unique day camp that explores the pioneer skills that were needed to survive in the frontier days of centuries past.
The “pioneers” learn and observe skills such as weaving and quilting, using an adze and throe and laundering clothes the old fashioned way, using lye soap and a washboard.
Volunteers teach the capters to make bread, churn butter and prepare stew over an open fire. Campers will learn to throw a Native American tomahawk and to start a fire with flint and steel in a frontier style campsite.
They will also have a chance to play with old-fashioned toys and learn about games played by children 200 years ago.
The program runs 9 a.m. to noon. Light refreshments will be provided.
The cost is $20 per child, and payment must be received in order to hold a spot for your child. A limited number of financial scholarships are available.
