Intersection to stay as is for now

NATCHEZ — While lanes have been shifting around at the intersection of John R. Junkin and Seargent S. Prentiss drives, no more major changes should take place in the near future.

Work on the continuous flow intersection is ongoing, Project Engineer Jim Eggleston said, and the latest addition is a newly paved turning lane off John R. Junkin.

The existing turning lane has been sequestered by cement barriers and will eventually become a straight lane instead of curved as it is currently.

Once the lane is straightened, it will become a turn lane but will form a T-intersection with Seargent S. Prentiss.

From that lane and an additional lane, motorists will be able to turn left onto Seargent S. Prentiss.

The newly constructed road that turns right onto Seargent S. Prentiss will become the permanent right-hand turning lane.

Median work on Seargent S. Prentiss is still ongoing, Eggleston said.

“We’re getting along pretty good on it,” he said.

A month ago, the road construction shifted two lanes of Seargent S. Prentiss slightly over to make room for work on the median, which caused some confusion amongst motorists initially.

Eggleston said the way the roads are laid out right now will likely remain that way for some time.

“There won’t by any major shifts for awhile,” he said. “The focus of the work will shift from the medians on (Seargent S. Prentiss) to all the work at the end of John R. Junkin.

“But it isn’t going to effect traffic pattern that much.”

The traffic signals, which will be a series of timed lights, will be the final step of the project before completion.

The project has been estimated to cost $7.9 million.

Work began in April of 2008, and its projected completion date is the end of this year.

While lanes are changing and the project is barreling forward, one thing remains the same.

“Always look out for the workers and use a little extra caution going through,” Eggleston said.
