Trisler has four-shot lead at Beau Pré Club Championship

NATCHEZ — The 2009 Beau Pré Club Championship is now Lloyd Trisler’s to win. And if he plays as well today as he did during Saturday’s first round, no one else in the championship flight will be able to catch him.

Trisler played as stellar of a round on Beau Pré’s golf course as one could play despite where the tees were set up, tough pin placements and the temperature hitting 90 degrees before noon. By the end of his round, Trisler shot a bogey-free 7-under-par 65 to take a four-shot lead over Jordan Farmer.

After pars on the first two holes, Trisler birdied the next three holes and then birdied the par-5 8th hole for a front-nine score of 32. He added birdies on 12 and 15 and completed his round with a birdie on the par-5 18th hole.

However, Trisler’s lead over Farmer would not have been so big had it not been for a couple of hiccups on the back nine.

“I was doing good. I was at 5-under after 12. Then I hit one bad shot on 13 and it cost me a double (bogey),” Farmer said. “I hit two bad shots and it cost me three shots. I’m a little disappointed. I could’ve gone real low today. Lloyd’s a heck of a player. I’m going to have to play really good to catch him.”

After a bogey on the 17th hole, Farmer was at 2-under-par, but got a shot back with a birdie on 18.

A tremendous save for bogey on the 3rd hole was key in Trampus Butler being in third place at 2-under-par 70.

“It was a good round. Didn’t hit the ball well. Kept plugging around on the course. Started with a birdie on 2. Saved a 15-footer on 3 for bogey. Had a lot of fun,” Butler said. “Got it to 3-under on 15. Then I bogeyed 17. Hit a driver and sprayed it right. I should’ve gone with a 3-wood.”

Then on 18, Butler had 210 yards to the hole for his second shot, but his chip shot went left of the pin and he ended up with a disappointing par.

“This is the first time I’ve played in the club championship where the tees were set up for a golf championship,” Butler added.

Stephen Hollingsworth overcame a rough start to his opening round to wind up in fourth place at 1-under-par 71.

“Hit 17 greens. Didn’t make any spectacular putts. I was 2-over through four holes,” Hollingsworth said. “Hit the ball really well all day. I just couldn’t make any putts.”

After bogeying Nos. 2 and 4, Hollingsworth’s rally started with birdies on 5 and 6 to get back to even par and then he got to 1-under thanks to a birdie on No. 9. After pars on the next six holes, He bogeyed the always-unpredictable par-3 16th hole. But he finished his round with a birdie on 18.

“Started out rough. Waited until the birdies came around and they did,” Hollingsworth said. “Should’ve made eight or nine birdies. I wouldn’t have caught Lloyd. He’s not going to let up, though.”

Richard Edgin and Dan Bland are tied for the lead in the first flight as each player had rounds of 77. Lane Feltus leads the second flight after he fired an 82. Wade Heatherly and Randy Johnson are tied for first place in the third flight at 88.

Doug Scruggs lead the seniors (50-70-year-olds) division after a first-round 85, seven shots ahead of second-place Philip Letard. Pete Buttross won the super seniors division with a 103 after Lucius Butts withdrew and will not have to play today.
