WESSON — Cameron Farmer hit a two-run home run to key an early rally as the Natchez 12-year-old All-Stars eliminated the Lincoln County Americans from the District 6 Sub-district Tournament with a 15-3 win in four innings Monday afternoon.
Natchez entered the bottom of the first inning trailing 3-0 after starting and winning pitcher Lester Wells gave up a three-run home run to Calcote with one out. Wells settled down and struck out the next two batters he faced.
“Pitching in this caliber baseball, everybody’s all stars. We’ve got very good pitchers,” coach Billy Ray Farmer said. “We’re trying to throw strikes and cut down on the walks. Lester was aggressive, but he left one over the plate and (Calcote) got a hold of it.”
Wells struck out the first batter, then walked the next two before Calcote hit the home run.
In the bottom of the first, Trey Fleming led off with a walk and Thomas Garrity walked. Fleming stole third and scored on a passed ball. Then Farmer went up to the plate and delivered the game-tying home run that bounced off the light pole. Wells helped his own cause with a solo home run that hit off the back scoreboard in centerfield to give Natchez the lead for good.
Wells gave up two hits in the top of the second inning, but he got out of that jam by striking out the next batter for the third out. He struck out six in two innings.
In the bottom of the second, Natchez put the game away by scoring eight runs — all of them with two outs.
Jaylon Fleming singled with one out, stole second and scored on a Ben Hewitt single with two outs. After a Caleb Watts single, Trey Fleming hit a three-run home run to give Natchez an 8-3 lead. Thomas Garrity then walked, stole second and third, and scored on a double to the fence by Farmer. Wells singled to bring in Farmer. After a Quinn Logan single, Jardarius Anderson singled in Wells and Logan.
“What I’m starting to see right now is our bats are starting to wake up. I see momentum and a lot of confidence back in them,” Billy Ray Farmer said. “They’re starting to get it back. I was pleased. We had three players hit home runs tonight.”
In the top of the third inning, the Lincoln County Americans got a base hit, but with one out, A. Neal hit a line shot back to relief pitcher Trey Fleming, who threw to Watts at first for the double play. Fleming pitched the final two innings and struck out three batters.
Then in the bottom of the third, Will Sandel and Jaylon Fleming got on with base hits before Alex Weadock hit a single to score both runners and Trey Fleming hit a two-out single to score Weadock for the game’s final run.
The Natchez 12-year-old All-Stars will take on the loser the Wesson-Lincoln County Nationals game in an elimination game today at 6 p.m.
“We’ve got plenty of pitching left. If we win (today), on Wednesday we will have to defeat the undefeated team twice,” Farmer said. “We’ve got the one-game-at-a-time attitude. We’re not looking ahead of anyone.”
