NATCHEZ — Some stores have sidewalk sales, but the Rent-a-Center on U.S. 61 north wasn’t when a Natchez man allegedly gave himself a 100 percent discount on a new clothes dryer.
Edwin Holmes Jr., 56, 1373 U.S. 61 North, was arrested by Natchez Police Tuesday and charged with felony grand larceny in connection with a June 30 incident.
At the time, employees of the Rent-a-Center were receiving new merchandise into the store, and when they unloaded the truck some of the merchandise was placed on the sidewalk outside the store while the employees moved the rest of it inside, Natchez Police Sgt. Craig Godbold said.
Holmes and another individual were reportedly driving by at the time, Godbold said.
“They stopped real quick, saw the dryer and ran with it,” he said.
The suspects weren’t able to spend much time with their new appliance, however, because a store employee was able to get the vehicle’s tag number and the police were able to track it to the suspects, Godbold said.
A warrant for the second suspect will be issued once the police gather more information about him, Godbold said.
Holmes was detained on a $5,000 bond Tuesday.
