JONESVILLE — Two adults are behind bars and a child is in state custody after Concordia Parish deputies and state troopers raided a fortress-like alleged methamphetamine lab.
When CPSO deputies Sgts. Denis Mulvihill and Billy Joe Ratcliff arrived at the scene — 3804 Louisiana 565 — at noon Wednesday, they witnessed a woman running into the building, but were unable to make contact, according to a statement from the CPSO.
The building, which authorities described as “highly fortified,” had barred windows, steel-reinforced doors and outside video surveillance.
Officers outside the building could reportedly smell chemical odors coming from the building, and reportedly found items used in the creation of methamphetamines outside, the statement said.
After nearly 12 hours of unsuccessful attempts to get the two adults inside to surrender, the Louisiana State Police SWAT team entered the building at 11 p.m.
Inside the building with the two suspects, Jamie Lynn Courtney Calhoun, 41, 242 Lower Woodville Road, Natchez, and Gerald Scott Forman, 45, 211 Ellard Road, Jonesville, was a 19-month-old child, according to the statement.
The child was placed in state custody, and Calhoun and Forman were booked at the parish jail on charges of resisting an officer, operation of a clandestine meth lab, possession of schedule II drugs, improper supervision of a minor, cruelty to a juvenile — child endangerment, possession of drug paraphernalia and obstruction of justice.
Hazardous materials experts worked through the night to clean the scene.
“This was a highly volatile situation in every sense of the word,” Sheriff Randy Maxwell said. “I’m extremely grateful that no one, especially the baby, was injured. The chemicals at that location were extremely dangerous and anything could have happened.”
The arrests followed a lengthy investigation, the statement said.
Maxwell thanked those who were present on the scene Wednesday night, including Fire District No. 1 and No. 2 personnel, the state police, the Drug Enforcement Agency, the Department of Environmental Quality and the Hazardous Materials personnel.
Bond for both Calhoun and Forman was set at $50,000 Thursday.
