LIBERTY — Adams County Christian School’s fast-pitch softball team did quite well at the Amite School Center Tournament last Saturday while Centreville Academy and Wilkinson County Christian Academy were eliminated early in the tournament.

The ACCS Lady Rebels won their first three games, two of them by way of the international tiebreaker rule, to end up in winners’ bracket finals and finished in third place.

“ACCS finished third out of 16 teams, which is a big deal for us,” Lady Rebels head coach Forrest Foster said. “I’m so proud of them. This was the first tournament to play in. We’re not a tournament team.”

In its first game of the day, ACCS easily defeated MAIS District 5-AA foe Central Private 7-1. Mary Sanders, who pitched all five games for the Lady Rebels, tossed a three-hitter and Kaitlan Melton was 2-for-2.

The Lady Rebels’ next two games were against much tougher competition and both went to extra innings and both had to use the international tiebreaker system.

ACCS stunned Class AAA Oak Forest 4-3 in six innings. After the Lady Yellow Jackets scored one run in the top of the sixth to take a 3-2 lead, the Lady Rebels had an answer. Tori Laird was bunted over to second base and Melton singled to put runners at the corners with one out. Then Megan Cole singled to score Laird and Melton for the game-tying and game-winning runs.

“It was by far the biggest win ACCS softball has had in three years,” Foster said. “That was a program-building win for us.”

In the finals of the top half of the tournament bracket, ACCS took on Copiah Academy’s junior varsity team — a team Foster said his team underestimated. The Lady Rebels needed all of their 18 hits and a four-run rally in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 12-11 win.

Lindsey Barber started the rally with an run-scoring triple. Sage Atkins doubled to bring in Barber to make it an 11-10 game. Katie Hester followed with a double that scored Atkins with the game-tying run. Melton singled with two outs to bring in Hester with the game-winning run.

Melton and Hester each finished with three hits while Cole, Barber and Atkins each had two hits for ACCS.

“All of the other teams in our district, Centreville, WCCA, Silliman, Central Private, got beat out. We drew a good bracket, but we had to beat a good team to get where we were in Oak Forest,” Foster said.

The Lady Rebels won the game even though Sanders walked nine batters and gave up a two-run inside-the-park home run to Kelly Byrd in the top of the first inning and a three-run inside-the-park home run to losing pitcher Jordan Jones in the top of the fourth inning.

Not only did ACCS had to play another game that went six innings, but the game was delayed for 30 minutes due to rain. That forced the Lady Rebels to have just 20 minutes to get ready for their next game, the winners’ bracket finals against Bowling Green.

The Lady Buccaneers won that game 6-1.

ACCS fell to the losers’ bracket finals and was soundly defeated by Oak Forest 11-1 in five innings to put its record at 5-5. Jacy Clemons was 3-for-3 with a triple and Meaghan Durand went 2-for-3 with a double to lead the Lady Yellow Jackets.

“Mary was just give out. We weren’t used to that,” Foster said. “We’ve really got the talent. We’ve just got the inexperience.”

In other tournament games, Centreville lost to Copiah Academy 4-3 and WCCA fell to Copiah Academy 4-2.
