Residents flock to open casting call for film

NATCHEZ — Dozens of people answered the open casting call Saturday for “The Story of Bonnie and Clyde,” which will film some scenes in Natchez later this year.
The casting call was at the Grand Soleil Hotel, and locals hopeful of being cast as extras or in coveted speaking roles crowded the hotel lobby, clutching resumes and headshots.
“I called on the way down here, and (the Grand Soleil) told us, ‘People are already lining up,’” Executive Assistant to the President of Cypress Moon Productions Kenny Davis said.
Local Holden Braswell was one of those at the casting call, and he said he would be happy to have any part in the film.
“When I heard about (the casting call) last week, I said, ‘I want to do it,’” Braswell said.
Crystal Springs resident Rosita Young said she has been an extra in two movies before, and she would like to do it again.
“I’m from California,” she said. “I wanted to do this one because it is just rare that (movies) are done in Mississippi.”
Saturday’s casting call was to look for extras, but the film’s writer, director and producer Tonya Holly said that if the casting director thought someone looked right for a role, they might get cast in a speaking part.
And that might mean being in scenes not shot in Natchez.
“If there is something I feel someone is great for, I will certainly bring them there,” Holly said.
“I think this film will be a great one for someone who has never been an extra.”
No solid locations have been set for the filming in Natchez, but some places being considered include Dunleith, several downtown banks, Jefferson College and the lumber mill, Holly said.
Locations in Mississippi other than Natchez where the film will be shot include Greenwood, Philadelphia and Woodville, and in Louisiana locations include Alexandria, Gibsland and St. Francisville.
The film had a casting call in Natchez two years ago, and Holly said she would also use resumes submitted from that session as well.
The story of the film will focus on the love story between legendary outlaws Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow.
Actor Kevin Zegers has been cast as Barrow, and actress Hilary Duff will play Parker.
