NRMC woes seem to be waning

Critics find it easy to pick on Natchez Regional Medical Center, the county owned hospital that has, in recent years, struggled with its finances.
NRMC has had its share of problems lately. Years of financial woes have plagued the facility. Some of the financial problems were publicly known and some apparently came from a former management company’s employee who allegedly misrepresented the financial status of the hospital.
Critics cried foul. Something criminal must have occurred, they said. Someone must have stolen money. No evidence of that has surfaced — and seems unlikely.
A highly paid “rescue” team was called in to help nurse the hospital back to financial health.
Critics cried foul. You’re paying too much for this, they said. NRMC now seems to be financial stable again.
Part of the prescription for fixing the hospital’s finances included some drastic expense cuts. Quite simply, the new management team said, the hospital was overstaffed for the volume of patients it was seeing.
Critics cried foul. It’s unfair to fire people, they said. The reality appears to be that the hospital was, in fact, overstaffed. And, in hindsight, perhaps some of the changes could have been handled differently, but the changes were needed.
A year later, despite having been unable to find a buyer for the hospital, NRMC’s management team and board appear to be moving the hospital in the right direction — seeking a permanent hospital administrator.
Critics may have found it easy to beat up NRMC, but the facility appears to be on the road to getting itself righted again. Having a hospital administrator who works for the hospital — instead of a management company — will go a long way to silencing the critics once and for all.
