WCCA head coach Sam Byrd IV said he was pleased with the overall effort considering it was homecoming week.

“They came out and played hard. They executed well,” Byrd said.

Hall completed two-of-five passes for 83 yards and on defense he had two quarterback sacks. Davis Bankston had nine tackles and Tramel McKinsey had three sacks of his own.

Briarfield 28, Huntington 6

LAKE PROVIDENCE, La. — The good news was that Huntington played well in the first half. The bad news was that could not slow down Briarfield in the second half and the result was a 22-point loss to the Rebels in a key MAIS District 6-A game for both teams Friday night.

Huntington (1-5, 0-2) scored its only touchdown on a 56-yard run by Shaq Witherspoon in the first quarter. Briarfield took the lead later on in the first half to take an 8-6 halftime lead and pulled away in the second half.

“We had a decent first half offensively. We played well defensively,” Huntington head coach Chad Harkins said. “Second half, Briarfield had a little more firepower. We played well through three quarters. We gave two fourth-quarter touchdowns. We just ran out of juice in the second half.

“Kevin Brown and Jess Dossett had good games defensively. Brown ran well between the tackles.”

The Hounds were also plagued by missed opportunities. They had the ball four times inside the Rebels’ 30-yard line in the first half, only to come away with no points.

Bowling Green 21, Centreville 0

FRANKLINTON, La. — What was supposed to have been, along with Central Private at Trinity Episcopal, the area’s game of the week in private school football between two of the best teams in MAIS Class AA turned into a shocker as the Buccaneers shut out the Tigers Friday night.

Bowling Green, ranked No. 5 in two statewide Class AA polls (one is a top-10 poll), shut down Centreville’s offense and held running back Zach Sinclair in check. The Buccaneers took a 15-0 lead at halftime and added another touchdown in the third quarter.

Centreville, ranked in the top 5 in both polls, has now been shut out in both of its losses this season and fell to 4-2 overall.
